To celebrate NAIDOC week, Gerringong Elder Joyce Donovan and local historian Dr Tony Gilmour will tell the story of Aboriginal housing in Kiama and along the NSW south coast.

Aunty Joyce brings a personal and family perspective of how governments tried to control how and where Aboriginal people lived and how they resisted and continued their long connection to Country.

Tony will explain that while many challenges remain, since the 1967 referendum, Aboriginal community-controlled housing organisations have provided culturally appropriate housing for local people.

They have given a strong voice to Aboriginal people in housing. Tony has been commissioned to write with respected Elder Uncle Tom Slockee the 20-year history of SEARMS Aboriginal Community Housing, an organisation based in Yangary-Batemans Bay.
