The Friends of Minnamurra have urged federal environment minister Tanya Plibersek to reject the proposed Boral sand mine expansion at Dunmore, describing it as ‘environmentally obscene. ’

Two weeks ago, the company referred part of the project to the federal government to assess the threat to endangered species.

Under the expansion, 7.5 hectares will be cleared, including 38 threatened Bangalary trees bearing 100 hollows that shelter local wildlife.

A 27-metre hole would then be built, with the risk of an overflow of material contaminating the Minnamurra River, which happened during flooding from the most recent mine expansion.

Boral states there are insufficient reserves of sand for construction in Sydney up to  2036.
