The Captain Christie Ocean swim is returning this year, later than the traditional January date.

The origin of the event dates back to 1882.

The story goes that Captain Christie accepted a challenge to swim the course for a bottle of whiskey.

Event Coordinator Pitch Payne explained that the water temperatures are warmer now, with the winds & seas typically calmer.

Competitors register tomorrow at Werri beach, then walk over the hill to Boat Harbour, where the race commences at 10 am.

Competitors race around the headland to the finishing line back at Werri Beach.
