A giant pothole several meres long on Gerroa road has now been filled though the road will continue to be closed for several days. Gerroa Road is the major road between Gerringong, Gerroa and Shoalhaven and a major alternative route to Nowra.
Shoalhaven Council has said the extended saturation is weakening the road and leading to very large potholes.
A process known as liquefaction can lead to entire road networks being damaged – as demonstrated in overseas studies.
Shoalhaven Council has filled more than 35,000 potholes with the estimated damage to local roads at more than 80 million dollars.
