Kiama Council has received a motion from Councillor Mark Croxford to reduce the number of councillors from nine to seven.

The motion is now open for public comment for 42 days and will require a referendum question at the next Kiama local government election in 2024.

Shellharbour council had previously reduced from 12 to 7 councillors and in 2021 went back up to 9 with 4 wards of 2 councillors, each with a directly elected mayor.

Kiama Council has also announced it has renegotiated its loan from the NSW government to pay the remaining $15 million owed for building Blue Haven Bonaira by August 2025.

Council has managed to repay 45 million in 3 years, with 2 payments of 15 million each in April and June of this year.

Also of interest is the axing of the Greater Cities Commission by incoming NSW Premier Chris Minns, which planned to make Kiama the hub of a new Illawarra Shoalhaven city.
