The Tripoli Way bypass is not new but has been in the spotlight since last week.

Shellharbour Council identified the extension of Tripoli Way back in 1961 to reduce congestion on the Illawarra Highway through Albion Park. This creates a continuous travel route between Terry Street in the east and Broughton Avenue in the west, avoiding the town centre.

Last week the current state member (and announced independent candidate) Gareth Ward & Deputy Shellharbour City Mayor Kellie Marsh confirmed that they have successfully secured $16.6 million from the state government; the funding comes from the Planning Department’s Accelerated Infrastructure Fund.

That was followed by a media release from opposition leader Chris Minns and Katelin McInerney (the announced Labor candidate for Kiama) regarding a commitment NSW Labor has made to fund the Tripoli Way Bypass, a $20 million contribution to the council for the project.
